Where Are All the Trans Men? They Have Always Been Here
Trans men have existed throughout history and in every society, yet remain largely invisible in public discourse and medical understanding.26 February 2026
When we talk about transgender people, the conversation often centres on trans women. Trans men, by contrast, seem to vanish from view. This invisibility is not because they are rare or new. Trans men have always been here, in every culture and throughout history. We simply have not learned to see them.
Part of this invisibility stems from how we understand gender and transition. Many people assume that being transgender is primarily about appearance or that medical transition follows a single, visible pathway. Yet trans men's experiences are diverse, and many live full lives with little public fanfare. This matters deeply for those seeking care, community, and recognition of their identity.
In this piece, I explore why trans men remain overlooked, what we miss by not seeing them, and why this visibility matters for medicine, society, and the individuals themselves. Read on to understand the full picture.
