What communities actually think about inclusion

When you ask the people who use a space what they want, you often get very different answers than the ones being argued about in headlines.

There's a lot of noise in the media about who should be welcome where, but much of it happens without actually asking the people involved. I've been struck recently by how different things look when you simply listen to what communities themselves say they need and want.

The pond metaphor is useful because it reminds us that public spaces belong to everyone who uses them, and everyone's experience matters. When you ask people directly—without agenda, without presumption—what emerges is usually more nuanced, more thoughtful, and more human than the polarised debate suggests.
